My Story

Howdy my name is David and I will write a bit about my interests on this page. Interests such as music production, motion graphics, VFX, interactive media, analog video et cetera.

I am very much focused on learning how to do things. My art and music is usually learning experiments. Nothing I make at the minute is made with the intention of being perfect, but with the intention of learning new things and how to better use computer programs to aid my creativity.

I have little interest in producing the best or boldest work. I try to learn something new every day, whether it’s music or graphics related. Since I began my learning journey, I have grown very comfortable using Ableton Live for music and TouchDesigner for visuals, but I am still far from an expert in either of these programs. I am also learning to use Side Effects Houdini, Unreal Engine, Blender, Avid Pro Tools, Audacity, Resolume, and a few others.

Music Production

Making music started my dive into artistry, I was in a bad place mentally and global lockdowns were in effect, so I started learning tiny bits of piano. Shortly after I started piano, I got a MIDI controller and started learning about making music on a computer. I used MPC Beats as my first DAW, but I didn’t really like it. I moved on to Ableton Live 9 as they had a 3 month trial, and I learned and made as much about music as I could in that time. The results of my initial learning are collected in a playlist on my soundcloud called “Colours”.

Visuals

A lot of raves I went to when I was younger had loads of sick visuals, and I decided I wanted to be able to make visuals specifically for my own music. This led me to TouchDesigner, Unreal Engine, Houdini, Blender and Resolume, which all have their own uses but mostly play nice with each other.

Synth Library

I am starting to work on a very long term project, which involves setting up a synth library and community space in Belfast. Since I started making music, I have made loads of friends online who live in my country but I never would have met without music. So I’d like to bring those connections and stuff into the real world and create a space to accommodate these kinds of connections. Very early stages on this idea!
